Yesterday, I wrote that despite Trump propaganda on Fox TV, Trump had lost, and my research and analysis in America also showed that he would lose. Trump will no longer be able to act as he pleases. In Türkiye, the autocratic Erdoğan is the most disturbed by this, because Erdoğan, who was close friends with Trump, also lost. Also, the US Ambassador to Ankara, Tom Bryant, lost. He will no longer be able to say absurd things. The F-35 aircraft, Kaan aircraft engines, F-16 refurbishment kits, and new F-16s that Erdoğan planned to use in his election campaign are now just a dream. In other words, the legitimacy provided by Trump has ended. A new era has begun. Now, the Social Democrats who won in America should be more constructive towards Türkiye, and their dialogue should be based on respect and understanding, because Turkey is very important to America. A country of strategic importance should not tarnish these relations with minority lobbies. Because Türkiye's return to democracy is crucial for all the peoples in the region. Now, democrats should pressure Türkiye to return to democracy. The damage a moderate Islamic government would inflict on Europe and America would be enormous. Your analysis of political developments in the United States and their implications for Turkey-US relations should be more constructive for American counterparts (policymakers, think tanks, or public opinion) on this issue.
A NEW ERA IN US-TURKEY RELATIONS: PRIORITIZING DEMOCRACY AND STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
The results of the recent US presidential election mark the beginning of a transformative period not only for American domestic politics but also for Washington's global alliances, particularly its relationship with Turkey. Despite media campaigns and populist rhetoric, the American electorate chose a path that strengthens democratic institutions, institutional accountability, and the traditional system of checks and balances. This political shift has profound consequences for Türkiye’s political landscape and the future of bilateral relations:
The End of Personalized Diplomacy: For years, the relationship between Washington and Ankara relied heavily on the personal closeness between Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This transactional approach often bypassed institutional channels. With the end of this era, the political legitimacy and influence that the Turkish leadership derived from this personal connection has effectively ended.
Defense Procurement Realities: The current Turkish administration’s expectations regarding major defense files, including the F-35 program, engine procurement for the domestic “Kaan” fighter jet, and F-16 modernization kits, will now face critical institutional scrutiny. The assumption that these strategic defense assets can be secured through personal political favors is no longer valid. Risks of Radical Governance Models: The international community must recognize that supporting or tolerating governance models based on political Islam or autocracy has destabilizing consequences. Such forms of governance not only undermine stability within Turkey but also pose long-term security risks for both Europe and the United States. A Call to Action for the New US Administration
With social democrats and progressives assuming leadership in the United States, a historic opportunity has arisen to place US-Turkey relations on a healthier and more sustainable foundation. For this new era to succeed, the following principles must be prioritized:
A Foreign Policy Based on Mutual Respect: The United States should engage with Turkey through constructive dialogue based on mutual understanding and diplomatic respect, permanently acknowledging Türkiye’s enduring geopolitical importance, not through the lens of temporary political leaderships. Protecting Relations from Fragmented Interests: Bilateral relations are too strategically vital to be jeopardized or derailed by the narrow agendas of minority lobby groups. Washington should adopt a broader and more holistic perspective on Türkiye’s strategic importance.
An Unwavering Emphasis on Democratization: The most critical contribution the United States can make…
