It is openly confirming its intention to assist the rogue state of Southern Cyprus in destroying Türkiye's rights and interests in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Amidst this chaos, Turkey and the UK, a non-EU member, are signing the Turkey-United Kingdom Strategic Partnership Framework Document in London on April 23rd, the 106th anniversary of the sovereignty we gained. This is like a serious joke of history! The Clash of Civilizations is Reviving In this context, for the first time, Turkey, along with Russia and China, is being openly presented to European public opinion at the highest levels of the EU as a systemic threat. France, which has nuclear powers in two regions with vital geopolitical interests in Türkiye (Cyprus and the Aegean/Eastern Mediterranean), also declared open hostility towards Türkiye around the same time. The timing of these statements is also noteworthy. This statement coincides with a period when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, known for genocide and war crimes, is hardening his anti-Turkey stance while an aggressive war with an eschatological and imperialist character is being waged on the other side of the Mediterranean, in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. The resulting picture shows that Huntington's "clash of civilizations" logic has gained so much power in European politics that it surfaces subconsciously whenever it gets the chance. Although official spokesmen in Brussels try to soften these statements towards the Western Balkans, the reality remains unchanged. The European Union now views Türkiye not merely as a candidate country or ally, but also as a potential geopolitical rival and a power to be controlled. This approach also reveals the essence of the Union's enlargement strategy. The inclusion of six Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia) into the EU signifies not only a process of economic and political integration, but also the limitation of Turkish and Russian spheres of influence on the continent and the exclusion of external actors from the system as uncivilized actors. How can a superior Europe fall under Turkish, Russian, and Chinese influence? That's the mindset! Indeed, just days after this statement, the European Parliament rejected a proposal by Slovenia, Spain, and Ireland to suspend the EU's association agreement with Israel, citing the humanitarian situation in Gaza and settler violence in the West Bank. This decision once again revealed the contradiction between Europe's rhetoric of values ​​and its geopolitical preferences. This mindset is a contemporary reflection of Europe's strategic subconscious. Out of 27 countries, only 3 can oppose Israel, which is committing crimes similar to the genocide of World War II; or, on the same days, a €106 billion aid package for the Bandera neo-Nazi movement in Ukraine to fight the Russians is approved. (Hungary had blocked this package during the Orban era, but this blockage has now been lifted along with Hungary.) From the Crusader Mentality to the Present Day To properly analyze this approach, it is necessary to look at the historical background of European thought. The idea of ​​the "other" is not new in Europe. The Crusades, which began in the 11th century, paved the way for the positioning of Turks as the "other" and "enemy" in the European mind. With the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, the main distribution center of the Spice and Silk Roads, controlled by Christian Europe, fell into the hands of the Ottomans, pushing Europe to seek alternatives and initiating the Age of Discovery. During this process, access to Indian and Chinese civilizations shifted to the seas, and transatlantic expeditions led to European states gaining greater control over nature, specifically the oceans. The resulting accumulation of great wealth accelerated economic and technological development; with the Reformation, followed by the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, colonial capitalist and later imperialist leadership in the global system passed into the hands of the West. In this context, the Turks were for a long time the "other" of Europe, especially after reaching the gates of Vienna; later, Russia was also included in the same category, first during the Napoleonic era and then after the Communion.
