The Atlantic think tank Trump Risks Causing a Global Catastrophe His irrational obsession with Greenland could lead to widespread conflict. By Tom Nichols Donald Trump has many bizarre obsessions, both as a person and as president. His focus is often on things he wants: the demolition of the East Wing of the White House, renaming the Gulf of Mexico, for example. Many of Trump's eccentricities are harmless, though unpleasant. (For example, he seems to hate dogs, but no one is forcing him to own one.) But some of his ideas are more destructive: his stubborn and uninformed adherence to tariffs has led to significant disruption in the international economy and harmed many of the American industries he claims to protect. But some of Trump's obsessions are extremely dangerous, and perhaps the most dangerous is his determination to seize Greenland from Denmark, which has been an ally of the United States for over two centuries. Perhaps because he doesn't understand how the Mercator projection distorts the scale on a map, the president thinks Greenland is "too big" and should be part of the United States. If Trump carries out his threat to use force to seize the island, he would not only shatter America's most important alliance; he could also trigger a series of events that could lead to a global catastrophe or even World War III.
