IFJE - INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF JOURNALISTS The Ottoman Empire lost the First World War, and the country was occupied. Those loyal to the Sultan supported the occupation, kissing the hands of the commanders of the invading forces and congratulating them. However, Gazi Mustafa Kemal, who opposed this occupation, relinquished his rank and left the army. He crossed into Anatolia with three trusted friends on May 16, 1919, aboard the Bandırma ship. The Kuvaimilliye (National Forces) were formed from peasants, teachers, muftis, and all segments of society who opposed this occupation. With the participation of soldiers who had been discharged and disarmed, these national forces fought the War of Independence with whatever they could get their hands on, and despite the advanced weapons of the world's most powerful modern states, they defeated seven states, becoming the first and only nation in world history to do so. So, I would like to remind you that the Kuvaimilliye (National Forces) are still ready for duty. I would like to remind you once again that the Turkish nation is a soldier nation; its women, girls, elderly, and young are always ready for war. We declare to the world, both domestically and internationally: NEITHER RUSSIA, NOR AMERICA, NOR CHINA, WE ARE TURKEY WITHOUT OUR INDEPENDENCE.
