- According to the Syrian state news agency (SANA), the Syrian army and allied forces repelled an attack by forces affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces alliance on villages in the northern countryside of Deir ez-Zor province on Tuesday.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are a Kurdish-led alliance in northern and eastern Syria fighting ISIS alongside the U.S.-led coalition. Led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and including Arab fighters, the SDF controls a quarter of Syria, including oil fields and areas where approximately 900 U.S. troops are deployed.
Turkey, Syria's northern neighbor, considers the YPG, and therefore the SDF, to be "terrorist" groups.
