IFJ - INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF JOURNALISTS NEWS WEEKThe conflict between Turkey and the Kurds is one of the world's longest-running armed conflicts. It is also hindering President Donald Trump's efforts to achieve lasting peace and encourage private sector investment in the war-torn Middle East. Last Thursday, Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), called on his supporters to lay down their arms. This presented a historic opportunity to finally end the conflict. A peace agreement is in the national security interest of the United States because it would have a positive and transformative impact on the broader region. However, until now, the overly bureaucratic and fragmented nature of the American government has prevented the United States from taking a coordinated approach to this conflict. For decades, the United States has either ignored or downplayed the conflict. Both Republican and Democratic administrations seemed to think that by ignoring the problem, it could go away. Instead, it only got worse. Left unresolved, the conflict deepened, turning into one of the world’s largest, longest-running, and most complex armed conflicts. It encompasses a vast geographic area encompassing four countries: Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. It directly or indirectly affects tens of millions of people. The “Turkish-Kurdish” conflict is no longer limited to Turks and Kurds. Due to Türkiye’s military interventions in Iraq and its occupation of parts of Syria, all ethnic and religious groups living in the region are being harmed, including Yazidis and Assyrian/Chaldean/Syriac Christians seeking to escape ISIS oppression. I worked at the State Department during the administration of former President Joe Biden. Using the State Department's internal opposition channel, I made recommendations on how the US could support a peace process between Turkey, its NATO ally, and the Kurds. Like former President Barack Obama, Biden ignored the issue rather than trying to resolve it. Trump should not make the same mistake. Instead, President Trump should do three things to support the Turkey-PKK peace process: end this effort.
