The Ministry of Justice rejected the request of European mayors who came to Türkiye to visit the ousted Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, in prison in Silivri.
According to Halk TV, the Ministry of Justice rejected the request of European mayors who came to Türkiye to visit the ousted Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, in prison in Silivri.
The mayors were welcomed today by Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan in the Sarajane district of Istanbul and visited the city hall. Following his opening remarks, Aslan stated that the Ministry of Justice had not permitted the European mayors to visit İmamoğlu in Silivri.
Nuri Aslan announced that the mayors of Eurocities and B40 member cities will travel to Silivri at 2:00 PM to offer their support, despite not having received permission from the ministry.
The "Democracy Special Award," awarded to İmamoğlu by European mayors, was presented to Dilek İmamoğlu, the wife of the arrested mayor. The award was presented to İmamoğlu by Barcelona Mayor Colboni.
İmamoğlu was elected Mayor of Istanbul in 2019 and re-elected in 2024. He was arrested on March 19th due to a corruption investigation and allegations of links to terrorists.
A series of charges against him could prevent him from running in the next presidential election.
His arrest sparked demonstrations across the country, which escalated into the most serious street riots since the Gezi Park protests of 2013. The protests spread across Turkey and were brutally suppressed by police. | BGNES
