1-THE SUN

In Turkish mythology, the sun had a greater importance at first. M.S. When the Uighurs accepted the “Mani” sect in 763, the “Moon” gradually began to gain great importance. However, we also know that during the Great Hun State, sacrifices were sacrificed after both the sun and the moon were respected separately. "In the Turks, the sun was the symbol of the east and the moon was the symbol of the west”. Of course, from time to time, all these thought patterns stopped changing. For example, a legend belonging to the Teleute Turks, “The moon was the symbol of the north and the sun was the symbol of the south”. This orientation was made according to the posture of the “Sky eagle” standing on the highest floor of the sky. It is said that “the left wing of this eagle covered the moon, and the right wing covered the sun”. Accordingly, the eagle's head was supposed to face east. This stance was also an appropriate orientation to Turkish mythology. According to the same legend, the moon was the symbol of the north, which is the land of darkness and nights, and the sun was the symbol of the south, where light reigns and the land of days.

But in the ancient Turks, “the sun was the symbol of the east“. According to them, the direction in which the sun rose was very important. In fact, the idioms used to say the directions were always related to the sun. For example, ”Sunset“ is like ”Sunrise". When the Göktürks determined their direction, they turned their faces to the east, that is, the direction in which the sun rose. For this reason, they called the east “Ilgeru”, that is, “Forward”. In the Epic of Oguz, a great importance was attached to the morning, the heaviness of the tan and the appearance of the day. "All life began with that day and the sun. And after the sun went down, everything stood still“. Such an understanding should be seen as normal for mounted Turks and tribes living in a war order. The doors of the Turkish Shamans living in the Altay region also always opened to the east. However, as a rule, the Turkish peoples opened their doors to the south so that they could see the sun. It seems that the Shaman, who had a religious and spiritual duty, was breaking this public pedestal and complying with the old religious order. Both in the Yakut Turks and in the Altay creation epics, “Paradise and the tree of life were also located in the eastern regions“.

In general, the idioms “Sun-Mother” and “Moon-Father” were used in the Turks. For this reason, in all fairy tales and legends, we see that the sun plays a female role and the moon plays a male role. In the pre-Asian cultures, the sun was female and the moon was male. Of course, it is very difficult to predict when mutual effects occur. In the legend related to the origin of the Turks in Egypt, “The sun begins to heat the water and soil at a time when it enters the sign of Saratan. These waters and slime gather in a cave, and the cave serves as a mother's womb for them. The first ancestor of the Turks, which consists of these slime, also takes the name Ay-Ata“. Here, too, the sun seems to play the role of mother again. But the father is not there.

The Yakut Turks regarded the moon and the sun as two inseparable brothers. According to them, the ”Sun God" (Kün-Toyon) was more important. In the Yakut legends, “We also see that the moon and the sun are fighting between them. Dec. Great heroes and good people were generally under the auspices of the moon and the sun. And the evil spirits were at war with them indefinitely. These evil spirits sometimes chased and captured the sun. The solar eclipse event occurred when such evil spirits defeated and captured the sun. The Yakuts also used to celebrate the feast of the moon and the sun in the spring”.

According to the Altay Turks, “The Great God Ulgen used to sit on a mountain that touched the moon and the sun. (According to some stories, according to some stories) God Ulgen was further away from the moon and the sun. his throne was built on the stars far away. In fact, the one who created the moon and the sun was also Ulgen, the God. (According to the Altay Turks), there was also a God who was formed from the crumbs of the sun and always brought goodness to people. The name of this God was “Water”. This God always protected people and allowed them to live comfortably and peacefully under the sky.

Legends about the "formation of the sun”:

Altay Altay legend, which we will summarize below, is also closely related to the “Türeiş” legends of the Altay Turks. In the legends of the Altay descent, too, there was nothing but an endless sea at first. According to the legend below, the moon and the sun were nothing more than a mirror (Toli). The name of the youngest son of Genghis Khan was also “Toluy”, that is, “Mirror”. According to this belief, “The moon and the sun had no power or power that they had by themselves. They were doing nothing but reflecting the light and warmth that God had given them. Finally, they were nothing more than a mirror, a piece of metal. For this reason, there have been those who have seen Shamans looking at fortunes with a mirror related to these beliefs. According to the shamans, whatever has happened and will happen in the world, everything and every event, would hit this mirror. Of course, the mirror in the Shaman's hand was also a symbol of the moon and the sun. the shaman, looking at this sun in his hand, opened his fortune and told his ideas about the future.

The Ostyaks, one of the tribes of Western Siberia, opened their fortune by looking at the sun and the spots on it without even having to take a mirror in their hands. Shamans also carried metal pilakas with pictures of the moon and the sun on their clothes. These were always tools that served for fortune-telling and magic, and also served as a substitute for a mirror. Now the nevi of these items would vary according to the wealth and size of the Shaman. There were Shamans who carried native mirrors with them, as well as shamans who had imported goods brought from China and on which there were pictures of the “Twelve signs” in the sky. The Altay legend about the formation of the sun is as follows:

“There is no moon, no sun, people fly,
"Those who fly give heat, they emit lights.
"Somehow, one day, a person got sick,
"God sent something that burned in the sky.
"Mirror-like things, they've grown up,
"Their lights have covered the heavens.
"They are burning in the heavens, they have become the moon and the sun,
"Living on earth, they became spouses to man”.

The above legends of the Altay Turks, the Kalmuks, changing a little more, tell as follows:

"The Son of Man lived in the heavens of God,
“There is no crime or sin in the roots of man.
“They don't need the moon or the sun,
“They live with God, there is no need for a wife.
"God was angry with them, he shaped man,
“He said go to the world, he sent it to the earth.
“Neither heat, nor heat, can scatter a person,
"For the sun, the son of man begged God,
"God has commanded the sun and the moon to always shine”.

According to Turkish mythology, “There was a sun and a moon in the sky“. As we go to North-East Asia and the Mongols, in their mythology, the number of the sun increases even more. This should rather be a belief that has come about through the influence of Buddhism and South Asian cultures. For example, according to Chinese mythology there were 10 and according to Indian mythology there were 7 suns. The iptidai tribes living in the north-eastern ends of Asia used to believe that there were “Three suns” in general. We will not pass by a legend belonging to the Golds living in this region without giving it here:

The earth and the sky are related from time immemorial,
The moon and the sun said“ "Oh, how rude they are!”
They attacked and took the moon and the sun from the sky,
They built dungeons on the ground and put them in prison from the root.
For some reason, the cruel place always crushes them,
The kind-hearted heaven, on the other hand, has always been sorry for itself.
The sky immediately became a hedgehog, descended from the heavens to the earth,
He made a bet on the ground, beat the ground on the bet.
He said“ "Give me a horse, it's very bright, like a mirror,
"He searched the place, he tried, he couldn't find a spear horse,
He gave the sun and the moon, he couldn't hold on much longer.

The sun is a symbol of ”warmth“ and the moon is a symbol of ”coldness":

In Altay Turks, the sun is generally seen as a symbol of heat and the moon as a symbol of cold. The fact that people burn from the heat during the day and get cold from the cold at night must have been one of the most important reasons that led to the birth of this belief. The legend, which we have summarized below, was told by Teleut Turks living in the north of the Altay mountains:

A great powerful khan who lived on earth,
He has a beautiful daughter, I love every minister.
Hakan said“ "My daughter is worthy of the moon and the sun,
“What is the son of man to me, how can he be a wife to him!”
He took his daughter, put her in a small garbage house,
He held the sun with the moon and sent it down from the sky to the ground,
The patience of the moon has been cut off, little has looked through the window,
The food is cut into ice, out of the popped pot.
According to Han's words, the sun looked through the door,
Flames reaching into the sky, burned down the house.
Hakan said“ "The sun and the moon, what is the matter with people?”
"Consider yourself a human being, go back to your home, girl!”

We can also see Buddhist influences in the second Altay legend, which tells about the ”creation of the sun". According to the Hindus, the moon was male and the sun was female. this legend also complements the previous one. Although Buddhist influences are clearly seen in the narration, the story has melted with the beliefs and styles of the Altaians and has become an indigenous mythology:

Mr. God Ochirvani found a fire one day,
He put the fire right on the tip of his sword.
He has turned this fire, at the tip of his sword,
The sun has just appeared in the sign of the heavens.
Angry at the cold waters, God struck the sword,
The earth became like the moon, the waters became the moon in the sky.

2-MONTH

"Wolves catch the moon, they thoroughly devour it,
"Ay, he goes home to bed, his wound is filled with blood!…”
