,Decision on Szekler's Hungarian national identity
The National Council of Szekler published its position on the Romanian referendum ten years ago, on 13 October 2011, with the above headline. As our situation has not changed since then, therefore - we will repeat before the 2022 census.

"The first part of the Szeklerland Statute of Autonomy, the most important document of the National Council of Szekler, states: This aim, which has an important place in the bill, has an important theoretical significance. To create institutional guarantees for the preservation of Szekler's Hungarian national identity, the Szeklerland We must gain autonomy.

Recognizing this, the communities of Szekler villages and towns formed the Szekler National Council, which was included in its statement on the demand for autonomy: Taking the path of self-determination, we proclaimed this right and will through the Szekler councils of the settlements and demanded the guarantee of legal Status and territorial autonomy. we did. ”

The opening meeting also formulates the essence of Szeklerland's autonomy: “We are convinced of the recognition of Szeklerland's autonomy, additional powers to preserve the identity of the Hungarian national community”

These unanimous resolutions place an unavoidable obligation on the delegates of the National Council of Szekler, the municipality and the councils of Székely, which means to assume Hungarian national identity during the official census and to encourage others in the same sense.

This moral obligation arises even from the decision of the General Assembly of Szekler, which met in Târgu Mureş in 1941, against the will of thirty thousand Szeklers: it emphasizes that the meaning of this holy name for us is Hungarian. ”

Szeklers should also fully understand why Szeklers appear as a separate nationality during the Romanian census. Already between the two world wars, ideologues of Romanian nationalism voiced demands for the Szeks to be listed as separate nationalities during the census, thus removing the Hungarian community living in a block hundreds of kilometers from Hungary's Trianon border from the map of Romania. . As a second step, the Szekler wanted to prove their Romanian origins so they shed a different light on the Trianon decision and ensure its long-term validity. The above-mentioned decision of Târgu Mureş's Szekler General Assembly was a worthy response to these so-called scientific experiments.

However, the organizers of the 1930 Romanian census considered that there was no separate Szekler or Csango language, and thus no Szekler or Csango nationality. Finally, Nicolae Ceausescu tried to implement the 1977 census, which was forced by Nicolae Iorga and his followers to contradict the historical fact that the Szeklers were not Hungarians. During this period, due to the situation of the Hungarians in Romania, relations between Romania and Hungary began to become increasingly tense, and in such cases the Romanian dictator wanted to convey the message that the Szeklers had nothing to do with Hungary. However, the loyalty of the Szeklers broke down on the conscious devotion of their Hungarians, and just over a thousand of the more than 1,700,000 Hungarians in Transylvania declared themselves Szeks.

After the regime change, Romania has preserved many of its legacy in the national question, which was a burden to democracy and an obstacle to full and effective equality among its citizens. Among these legacies is the definition of nation-state in the Romanian constitution, but more importantly, the anti-Hungarian interpretation of this definition, which is contrary to international law, as well as the attempt to separate the Szeklers from the Hungarian nation. census.

The Szekler have always known that he is the keeper of the oldest and purest Hungarian traditions, his historical mission to protect the nation and Hungary, the most Hungarian tribe of Hungarians.

Accordingly, if we Szekler were asked today, we would declare ourselves Hungarian, and even during the census, our grandchildren would do the same.”

What has changed over the decade is the opportunity provided by the Szekler / Szeklerland identity card, which will be open to anyone who claims to be Szekler and serves to express our Szekler identity and proudly declare ourselves Szekler as part of the Hungarian nation. At the same time, the Szekler identity card is a complex IT, legal and technical system that allows us Szeklers to count and organize ourselves, not the officials of the Romanian state. This is the road to autonomy.
