    Nardugan is a holiday celebrated among Turks on 21 December every year.[1] It is celebrated as Saturnalia in Rome and Dionysus Festival in Ancient Greece. Turcologist Murad Adji and Sumerologist Muazzez İlmiye Çığ claimed that Turks celebrated nardungan before accepting Islam. Turcologists Abdulhaluk Mehmet Çay and Ahmet TAĞIL stated that there is no historical document showing that pre-Islamic Turks celebrated such a holiday.[2][3] Ayaz Ata, who is associated with the festival of Nardugan and whose origin is Ded Moroz in Slavic paganism, is a figure popularized in Central Asia during the Soviet period. Ded Moroz is the Russian mythology equivalent of Santa Claus. The word Nardugan is used today in Central Asian countries to express the winter solstice.
    Etymology
It is seen that Nardugan, which is also compatible with Paktıgan and Koçagan holidays, which are celebrated by the Turks, is part of a tripartite structure together with the holidays based on the solstice. Nardugan is formed from the words Nar (Sun) in Mongolian and Tuqan (Doğan) in Turkish. Tatars call this holiday Koyaş Tuga, that is, the Day of the Sunrise. Bashkirs, Udmurts Nardugan or Mardugan, Mishar Tatars Rashtua, Chuvashs Nartavan or Nartukan,[5] Zirizyas Nardava, Mokshas Nardvan.
