South America is a continent located in the south of America.[1] Although it is located in the Southern Hemisphere, a small part of its territory is located in the Northern Hemisphere.[1] It is found in the east of the Pacific Ocean, in the west of the Atlantic Ocean, in the south of North America and in the north of Antarctica.[1] South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers.[1] It covers approximately 3.5% of the Earth's surface.[1] Compared to 2005, its population is more than 371 million. South America is fourth in intercontinental area and fifth in population. The Andes Mountains, Angel Falls, Amazon River, Atacama Desert, Amazon Jungle, and Machu Picchu are located in South America.
A human presence in South America dating back to 16,500 BC has been confirmed by archaeological excavations. It is thought that there was a permanent population in the Amazon Forest in 10,000 BC. Evidence has been found that this population was engaged in hunting, gathering, and agriculture. Norte Chico, Canari, Chibca, Muisca, Chachapoya, Chavin, Moche, Inca, Arawak and Carib communities[2] established various civilizations until the region was discovered. These communities were largely destroyed by the planned exploitation of the region by agreements between Spain and Portugal. In 1500, Spain conquered Central America. In 1550, Spain gained power in Colombia and Portugal in Brazil. In 1650, England, France and the Netherlands also made discoveries in the region. In 1800, South America was completely colonized.

In 1810, under the leadership of Simon Bolivar, rebellions began in many countries in South America. Paraguay gained independence in 1811, Chile in 1818, Colombia in 1819, Peru in 1821, Brazil in 1822 and Bolivia in 1825. Spain and Portugal had to withdraw completely from the region. England, France and the Netherlands continued their dominance in some regions. In 1825, as a result of the power struggles between Brazil and Rio de la Plata, war broke out between the two countries. Thus, the conflicts between the countries that gained independence in South America began. In 1828, war broke out between Colombia and Peru. In 1836, Chile and Argentina declared war on the Peru-Bolivian Confederation. These conflicts, which lasted until 1870, caused the great division of South America.

Conflicts continued due to power struggles from 1870 to 1910. In 1917, Brazil participated in World War I on the side of the Allies. By sending several ships to the Mediterranean, they acted with the naval forces of England and France. II in 1942. Participating in World War II, Brazil sent support to Italy for the landing. The Cold War, which started in 1947, caused conflicts to increase again. Many rebel groups have emerged in Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Paraguay. In 1982, the Falklands War took place between Argentina and England. In 1990, the effects of the Cold War began to wane. Countries in South America have passed to democratic governments. After 2000, some countries experienced economic crises due to the increase in foreign debt.
