Until World War II, it was called the World War or the Great War. It was called Harb-i Umumi (Ottoman: حرب عمومی) in the sense of "General War" by the Ottoman Empire, and Mobilization among the people. Until the United States entered the war, the war was referred to as the European War in the United States.[by whom?][2] The great powers of the time[3] split into two sides and took part in the war: the Allies (the United Kingdom, the French Republic, and the Russian Empire). centered on the Triple Entente) and the Central Powers (mainly the Triple Alliance of the German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Kingdom of Italy, but Italy did not enter the war as Austro-Hungary counterattacked the treaty).[4] These alliances were restructured (Italy sided with the Allies) and expanded as new states entered the war. The main reason for the Kingdom of Italy to pass to the Entente Powers is that the French Republic and the United Kingdom promised to give land from the Ottoman Empire, which had not yet entered the war, if the Kingdom of Italy entered the war on their side. Ultimately, 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized for one of the greatest wars in history.[5][6] Nearly 9 million combatant World War I casualties as a result of the massive improvement in weapons lethality thanks to new technologies, but not the same amount of improvement in defense and mobility. Thus, this war became the fifth war with the most casualties in the history of the world and led to many political changes and revolutions in the states participating in the war.[7]

One reason for the war was the long-standing imperialist foreign policies of the European Great Powers, the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Russian Empire, the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Italy, and the French Republic. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria, by a Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip on 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo was the event that triggered the war. After the event, the Austro-Hungarian Empire sent an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia.[8][9] Finally, within a few weeks, with the operation of the alliance system that has been structuring for decades, the main powers of Europe found themselves at war and the war spread all over the world through the colonies.

On July 28, the conflicts started with the occupation of Serbia by Austria-Hungary[10][11] and this was followed by the German invasion of Belgium, Luxembourg and France, and the Russian attack on Germany. When the German march on Paris came to a standstill, the fighting on the western front turned into a stagnant trench war, and this situation did not change much until 1917. On the eastern front, the Russian army successfully fought Austro-Hungarian forces but was repulsed by the German army from East Prussia and Poland. Additional fronts were opened when the Ottomans entered the war in 1914, Italy and Bulgaria in 1915, and Romania in 1916. When Tsarist Russia was destroyed by the October Revolution in 1917, it also withdrew from the war. After a German offensive along the Western Front in 1918, the Allies repulsed the Germans with successive attacks, and US forces began to enter the trenches. At this point, Germany, which was already in trouble with the revolutionaries within itself, accepted the armistice on 11 November 1918, which would later go down in history as the Armistice Day. The war thus ends with the victory of the Allies.

As the warring parties tried to mobilize all their human power and economic resources for an all-out war, the situation of the civilians was as turbulent as the fronts. With the end of the war, four of the great imperialist powers; The empires of Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire vanished into history. Of these, the successors of the German and Russian Empires suffered great territorial losses; The Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires were completely disintegrated. Europe map in smaller pieces
